Movie Review – Work It (2020)

Movie Review - Work It (2020)Work it’ is a light-hearted and fun teen movie that opens right in the middle of a tightly choreographed dance which is voiced over by Quinn (Sabrina Carpenter) who is an undiscovered talent indeed. Quinn has her goals set straight – to attend Duke University, the alma mater of her late father. However, this dream was hanging on by a thread as she failed to attain enough extracurricular activities to gain the interest of Ms. Ramirez(Michelle Buteau), the Duke admission’s officer. To save herself from completely drowning, Quinn ties herself to the lie that she is on her school’s best dance team and will be performing at the ‘Work It’ dance competition while keeping her eye on the prize. Due to her severe lack of dance skills, the dance team leader, Juilliard (Keiynan Lonsdale) doesn’t give her the chance to join and so in order to keep up with her lie she makes her own team alongside her best friend, Jas (Liza Koshy) and other ‘diamonds in the rough’. With the help and support of choreographer Jake Taylor (Jordan Fisher), Quinn sets out to win – but not without a few bumps along the way!

We all love rom-com! ‘Work It’ is alongside various movies such as ‘Footloose’, ‘Step-up’ and ‘Bring It On’ and is obviously not supporting an original idea but who doesn’t love the “smart girl tries to win a competition for college money” story-line?

Movie Review - Work It (2020)

As a dance movie, ‘Work It’ certainly showcases the large amount of talent that is its cast. Carpenter, Koshy and Fisher all enjoy their spotlight and have their moments to shine whether it’s actually through dance or through the drama and romance.

To sum it up, ‘Work It’ isn’t exactly a must-watch Netflix original, but it does deserve its applause. Ultimately it would seem that ‘Work It’ just isn’t enough to Work It’s way up to being one of Netflix’s best works.
